THROUGH THE WOODS is a series of original images created with an i-Pencil on an i-Pad Pro. These works began as an “ode” to the familiar phrase, “can’t see the forest for the trees.” They were created in two versions. One as a format of “grids” interlocking and meshing in a complex multilayered cacophony of trees, branches, limbs and appendages, forming infinite readings of navigations through densely populated forests. The second were groupings of vertical rows of trees and bark, where branches and limbs are replaced with seemingly “alchemistic” and symbolic objects, depicting vessels, containers, platforms, shelves, and ritualistic ornamental devotional objects.

Each of these groupings are created with the use of photographic appropriations as backdrop, or as in the “grids” as tree forms themselves. Then using the i-Pencil’s “hands-on” capabilities of classical drawing techniques, detailed alterations and nuanced renderings are introduced to enhance the poetic drama and to present an overall theatrical experience of light and dark “inventions” to the prevailing narrative. The narratives proposed are a symbolic dialog aimed towards the prevailing complexities, contradictions, as well as the harmonies formed within the experiences of our current challenges and perceptions as human beings. These metaphorical reflections help to represent our own personal identities of place and time. The “forest” seemed to be a powerful and apt metaphor for what we currently face as a species, as well as unique individuals finding our own paths, “through the woods.”

Michael Mogavero
Michael Mogavero received his M.F.A. from the Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD.
